BS MD NUTRIA FAWCETT-1.jpg
DEALE ISLAND, MD--/05/10/2007--A black rat snake rests in the tall marshland grasses on Deale Island, Md. Thanks to a colony of invasive nutria, a large simi-aquatic rodent natives to South America, marshlands throughout the Chesapeake Bay area are being destroyed by the animals. Once marshland grasses are eaten and the root structures die off, soil errodes away from the vegitation it supports turning the wildlife-rich marshlands into lifeless mudscapes.GLENN FAWCETT/SUN STAFF MANDATORY CREDIT: No Mags, No Sales, No Internet, No TV, Washington Post, Washington Times, Baltimore Examiner and Washington Examiner OUT
